Chapter 6

The Creative Process

When it came time to record as a solo artist, I searched long and hard for what I wanted to say, and I wasn’t always sure what it should be. I knew I loved the Lord, and I wanted to sing about Him, but I was continually learning who I was as a person and as a performer. I didn’t want to make any mistakes. So, I had to put myself in a place where I could go beyond singing and performing music, and move into learning the intricacies of writing music, then the process of recording.

I found out very early, if you don’t have an idea of who you are—especially as a young artist—somebody will tell you. People are standing in the wings, ready to insist you should record this kind of music. You should sound that way. You should change it up. And they may or may not be right.

So I dove into the writing and recording processes with my college background of French chanson, German lieder, and Elizabethan love songs, my childhood love of James Brown and Jimmy McGriff and all things jazz, and my serious study of voice and percussion. And I surrounded myself with people who really knew what they were doing. Here’s what I learned along the way.
